When we built our first raised bed garden, which now has 12 beds and grows more than 35 different plant types, we realized that growing our vegetables vertically would give us healthier, more fruitful plants than a traditional garden could.
Growing plants up instead of spread out on the ground allows us to grow more plants in less space and at the same time gives us more fruit and less crop-damage. As we gained experience with vertical gardening, and having spent years manufacturing decorative steel decor, I began to design and build innovative trellises made of welded steel that would last a lifetime and were specifically designed to be both attractive and functional.
As our plants grew in their trellises, we noticed that some plants need different supports and different spacing, so we began to customize the trellises to different plants' needs. Tomatoes, for instance, need lots of top space, cucumbers and cantaloupes like closely-spaced supports, and large-fruiting crops, like spaghetti squash and watermelons, need open supports that allow better access to the fruits and fruit supports.
Our line of steel trellises now reflects what we learned along the way.
Our goal is to make exceptionally strong, convenient, functional and beautiful additions to today’s vertical gardens.
Our test garden helps the line evolve and adapt and helps us create artistic trellises that give modern gardens a unique look – the kind of garden that looks great on the garden tour!
The line is constantly changing as we learn new things that look better, help keep prices as low as possible, and grow healthier, more productive plants.
Grow Up! trellises are hand-crafted at our facilities in Clarkdale, Arizona. Each starts with a frame made of 3/8" round steel bar or more rustic rebar, if you prefer. Interior supports are all solid steel round or flat bar of appropriate sizes for the piece.
Supports are spaced to support young plants so they will find their way up the trellis naturally. The spacing makes gathering fruits or pruning plants easy and reduces damage to fragile vines.
Ornamented trellises - those with "-O" after their item number - cost slightly more. The ornaments vary with availability and we will try to use several different top ornaments on your order.
All of the trellises are available with a top ornament. These really finish the piece, turning it into functional garden art!
Top ornaments add a small amount to the cost.

The Grow Up! Double Helix trellis is our favorite trellis for vining plants with large fruits like spaghetti squash, cantaloupe, and even watermelons! The open structure allows quick and easy access to the vine, so you can keep it climbing, and to the fruits, to harvest them easily.
The Double Helix mimics the DNA molecule that’s necessary for all life on earth and it’s a beautiful design for all the life in your vertical garden!
